Mélanie is featured in the September issue of Harper’s Bazaar Australia and thanks to my dear friend Tran, we now have the scans in our gallery! She talks about how she did ‘Beginners’ for the love of her art and how was working with Ewan McGregor. Definitely worth reading, enjoy!

Mélanie’s new film “Beginners” is finally coming out so a lot more promotional material has been released! There is a featurette, as well as a new clip featuring Mélanie. Watch the featurette below and the clip here, plus see captures from both in the gallery!

Mélanie Laurent: “Je n’ai jamais ressenti autant de pression”

Entre un très bel album En t’attendant, les concerts, la sortie prochaine du délicieux Beginners avec Ewan Mc Gregor, la maîtresse de cérémonie du Festival 2011 a un emploi du temps aussi surchargé qu’excitant. Elle le passe en revue pour nous.

Le 15 juin, on vous retrouvera dans Beginners de Mike Mills, un film indépendant américain où vous jouez une actrice française amoureuse d’un jeune homme dépressif qui vient de perdre son père, dont il a quelques années plus tôt appris l’homosexualité. Comment avez-vous eu accès à ce projet?
C’est mon agent américain qui m’a fait passer ce scénario en me disant qu’Ewan MacGregor et Christopher Plummer étaient attachés au projet et que pas mal de comédiennes avaient été approchées, dont Michelle Williams. Et même si mon anglais n’est pas parfait, j’ai tout de suite été emballé par l’univers de Mike (Mills). On m’a alors demandé d’envoyer des essais filmés et j’ai eu envie de les faire avec mon ami Benoît Pétré (Thelma, Louise et Chantal). Et il y a parfois des connexions étranges. Car il m’a alors expliqué que c’est la vision du premier film de Mike, Âge difficile obscur, qui lui a donné envie de faire du cinéma ! On a donc fait ensemble un mini court métrage à partir de certaines scènes du film. Et Mike m’a rappelé peu après pour me dire que ces essais correspondaient exactement à sa vision du film. J’étais vraiment très heureuse.

On the first day of shooting with Mélanie, in the morning before we got going, I left her in her trailer with my I-pod cued up to Chan Marshall’s version of this song. When you listen to the way Chan sings this song; with such simple and real loneliness and longing, I thought this was a way to experientially share with Mélanie how much her character Anna wants love, “you kiss me, with your kiss my life begins” and simultaneously how easily it all falls apart. The way Chan sings “we are creatures of the wind, wild is the wind” feels so real to me, the words are amazing but the quality of her voice, all the emotion in there is what I hoped to communicate. Not sure, but I think Melanie came away from that thinking I was pretty intense – that’s funny.

A little while back, the trailer for Mélanie’s upcoming film “Beginners” was finally released. It was very critically well-received at TIFF and the trailer looks promising as well — I can’t wait!
