Hello, Mélanie fans! I know this is old news for many of you at this point, but I haven’t had the time to pay as much attention to the site as I’d like to lately. Mélanie’s upcoming English language feature “Beginners” has been assigned a release date — June 3rd, 2011 in the USA — and a clip featuring her has been released! No formal trailer yet, and I don’t expect one for a while since the release date is so far away, but it’s something for now. An expanded synopsis for “Beginners” is finally available, and we learn a little more about Mélanie’s character, though unfortunately she’s one of the few still without a name! Check it out below.

Following his father’s death, a bereaved Oliver becomes somewhat of a shut-in. As Beginners takes us through his personal journey, the film flashes forward, intercutting a budding relationship between Oliver and a young French actress (Inglourious Basterd’s Mélanie Laurent) whom he meets at a costume party that he attends under duress. The twin narratives gradually reveal subtle associations about how Oliver reacts to both these unpredictable relationships, and how his father and girlfriend motivate him to surpass his self-prescribed limitations.

Now for something I’m sure many of us have been waiting for: some news and our first peek at Mélanie’s first English-language American movie, Mike Mills’ “Beginners.” The film is set to have its world premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, which runs from September 9 – 19. I’m not sure whether Mélanie will be there to attend the premiere or any press events, since the festival overlaps with her filming of “Et soudain, tout le monde me manque”, but I’m hoping she’ll be able to make it at least for a day. This also means we get our first official glimpse of Mélanie in the film! Here you can see her alongside co-star Ewan McGregor. Thank you to the people at ioncinema for the still!

The film might not be coming out until 2011, but we’ve gotten our first glimpse at Mélanie in costume much sooner! Some snaps of Mélanie and Ewan on the set of “Beginners” have hit the internet, and I’ve added the 15 medium-quality ones featuring Mélanie  to the gallery. It looks like her styling in this film is going to be amazing — she looks gorgeous!

Now for some of that exciting news! While Mélanie had no plans of intentionally pursuing Hollywood after “Inglourious Basterds,”opportunity struck fast and she has been cast in her second American production — this time fully English-language. The film is “Beginners” by director Mike Mills and has a mid-November to mid-December shooting schedule. No word on Mélanie’s part yet, or even a full synopsis, and unfortunately we’re going to have to wait until 2011 to see it on the big screen. Her co-stars in the production include none other than Christopher Plummer and Ewan McGregor!

Mike Mills’ previous work includes his debut feature “Thumbsucker” (Lou Taylor Pucci, Kelli Garner) and music videos for acts such as Air.

Think of her as this year’s Marion Cotillard. Showcased in Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, French thesp Melanie Laurent might have made further strides in the English language film sector – landing a part in Mike Mills’ Beginners (currently shooting in Los Angeles).
