Mélanie Laurent : “J’ai grandi avec le sentiment que tout est possible”

Quand d’autres squattaient les premiers rangs des défilés et les platines du Montana, elle passait deux ans devant un ordinateur, une table de mixage et un écran combo à faire son album et son film. Ce petit soldat en robe à fleurs qui va à l’essentiel pense vite et carbure au thé vert, livre aujourd’hui au public le premier de ses bébés : un disque très personnel, sorte d’inventaire mélancolique de sa quête amoureuse.

Madame Figaro. Un disque, la scène, Cannes et un premier film à la rentrée… Vous n’avez pas l’impression d’en faire trop ?
Mélanie Laurent. Tout arrive au même moment ! Mais c’est une question de planning. J’ai attendu trois ans de pouvoir tourner mon film, et ça fait des années que j’écris des chansons, que je travaille sur un album. Faire toutes ces choses et tout gérer à la fois, cela m’effraie et me donne le trac. C’est sans doute l’une des raisons pour lesquelles j’en fais autant. En permanence, je me lance des challenges, et puis j’ai ma petite méthode pour trouver le courage d’aller au bout : je ne lis rien me concernant, je ne vais jamais sur Internet, je ne sais pas comment sera perçu mon album ni ce que les gens pensent de moi en tant qu’actrice. La critique, qu’elle soit bonne ou mauvaise, me coupe les jambes. Je ne veux pas savoir, sinon je n’avance plus. Ma liberté vient de là.

There is an article on the website for Malibu Magazine on Mélanie that I hadn’t seen before, written back in December. It’s the most in-depth English-language feature on her that I can recall, so definitely worth a read!

No Place to Fall

Yes, Mélanie Laurent starred in Inglorious Basterds. Yes, Mélanie Laurent is French. And yes, Mélanie Laurent is beautiful. But did you know she giggles? A lot? Like a schoolgirl? It could be because she gets nervous and tongue-tied speaking English, seeing as she only recently learned it for her role as Quentin Tarantino’s pensive, chain-smoking Shosanna, a role she never thought would come her way. “For me, doing an American Hollywood project was, like, impressive because I never really wanted to just do American movies because I didn’t think I was capable of doing it. First, I didn’t speak a word of English, so I had to learn fast on set. And second, it was new for me.”

Well, not so new. This magnetic ingénue spent more than a decade as a successful actress in France. But she wanted to do more than just act. Laurent needed a push. Despite her ethereal, almost untouchable beauty, she apparently suffers relationship crises like the rest of us. “I spent three years in a house, in a bad relationship. I wasted a lot of time,” she says now. What changed? “I broke up with a guy!” she laughs.

Mélanie was also recently on TV chat show Le Grand Journal to promote “Requiem pour une tueuse.” I can’t embed the video, but you can watch it on the CanalPlus website! See screencaptures below. Something minor but unfortunate that she reveals in this interview is that she won’t be at this year’s César Awards, the first time she hasn’t attended in four years, even though Tarantino will be there to receive an award. Hopefully we’ll still see her out and about again soon with Paris Fashion Week coming up!

Thanks again for Virginie for donating scans! Mélanie has a spread in magazine Paris Match, photographed by friend and director of her old film “Le Dernier jour.” The pictures are really cute! The interview touches on many of the same subjects she’s spoken of recently, but she also talks a bit about her family and reveals that she plans on taking 7 months to go on tour for her album in 2011.
