Even though it hasn’t been released outside of France yet, there have been a few English-language reviews of Mélanie’s latest, “Requiem pour une tueuse” / “Requiem for a killer.” The verdict isn’t very positive (to say the least), but they’re good reads if you can’t read French but still want to know a little more about the movie. Handel’s “Messiah” is, quite literally, a killer oratorio in “Requiem for a Killer,” but despite some big-name Gallic stars and a glossy finish, tyro scribe-helmer Jerome Le Gris’ suspenser is hardly the Second Coming. Modeled on classic Agatha Christie and Hitchcock, this thriller is almost entirely powered by cliches, and its cluttered editing and storytelling needlessly drain the proceedings of the requisite tension. With a post-”Inglourious Basterds” Melanie Laurent in the lead, pic could arouse some interest locally before a final dirge as a genre item at film weeks and in ancillary.
